Prologue
Storm:
Good morning Sergeant Thompson. I am Dr. Storm, Suffolk County Chief
Medical Examiner. Sorry we have to meet under these circumstances, but
as you know, sergeant, whenever a violent homicide has been committed,
our office has to respond to the scene. Thompson: Morning Dr. Storm. Lieutenant Miller and myself found the victim; killed by a single arrow. It appears he was shot through the heart. Storm: Sad, very sad. He Must have suffered intense physical and mental pain. What disturbs me is the strange choice of murder weapon, sergeant. In all my years with the office I've never heard of a bow and arrow scenario; barbaric, simply barbaric. |
| Thompson: I agree, but why mental anguish Dr. Storm? Storm: It was not instant death, sergeant; his life force held on for a number of seconds, possibly a minute before his heart stopped pumping due to massive hemorrhaging and severe trauma. I'm certain his mind struggled with tortured agony at how he perceived himself dying. Thompson: Doctor, are you suggesting that he died two deaths; one physical and one mental? Storm: As cruel as that sounds, sergeant, that pretty much sums it up. I only hope this was some kind of grudge killing and not the beginning of a serial murderer game plan which could be just the tip of an iceberg with more gruesome murders to follow. Thompson: You, of course, remember the Ferryman killings, doctor. As repulsive as that serial killer case was, I can't even conceive of what a deranged psychopath, running around with a bow and arrow could cause. Storm: Don't trouble yourself, sergeant, this could be all conjecture. Right now we're dealing with a single murder. Thompson: I agree and pray it remains so. Storm: Time will tell us, sergeant. |

Prologue
An
unthinkable sense of impending doom is lurking in this hamlet. It cannot
be stopped. Montauk has many personalities; she is a nonforgiving paradise.
Drop your guard and this old salt known as 'the gray lady'" will
show you no mercy, no exceptions. She's been here too long and has seen
it all. Just count the number of ship wrecks along her northern and
southern coasts. Even Captain Kidd was done in by this seemingly enchanted
old lady. This coastal site is the shifting grounds of virgin dunes,
pristine safe harbors and jetties. It's the surf roaring to the south
and the quiet bays humming to the north. |
Montauk
is one of the great surfcasting ports on earth. People from all over
the world come here to try their luck. It's a Mecca, a calling, a luring
to the anglers seeking out the most exciting and heart pounding striped
bass and blue fishing ever. This quaint old village, where for many generations, its hardy men and women have earned a livelihood by netting and fishing the depths of her deep waters and shallow bays, has been rewarding. Her fishing ground both in the Atlantic and in the bays are the finest in northern and southern waters. Here marine life is found in abundant crop numbers as well as countless game fish and shell life. Numerous loves have met their fate along these scenic shores. She has a charm, but there is a dark side hidden by her remarkable warm and seductive nature. Strangely enough, even a few surfcasters, with their keen sense of adventure and intuitive knowledge of her beaches have perished. |
